Babylon Branch Track Improvement Work Weekend of April 22-23 Will Impact Train Service

MTA Long Island Rail Road crews will be out in force along the Babylon Branch on the weekend of April 22-23 to replace concrete railroad ties between Rockville Centre and Merrick. As a result of this proactive work to renew the railroad’s infrastructure, the LIRR will need to reduce service on the Babylon Branch from half-hourly to hourly during certain hours of the day on Saturday and Sunday. Similar service changes may also be in effect for the following several weekends as work progresses.

LIRR to Provide Additional Train Service for Good Friday

The Long Island Rail Road will provide additional eastbound service from Penn Station this afternoon, Friday, April 14, for customers leaving work early in observance of Good Friday. Ten additional trains will depart Penn Station between 1:49 p.m. and 3:48 p.m. There will be four additional trains on the Babylon Branch, three extra trains to Hicksville and Huntington, and one each to Far Rockaway, Great Neck and Ronkonkoma.

Governor Cuomo Announces Completion of Environmental Statement for LIRR Expansion Project

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the completion of the environmental impact study for the proposed LIRR expansion project – one of New York's greatest efforts to increase capacity of the commuter railroad since it was first built in the mid-19th century. The Final Environmental Impact Statement confirms the expansion project will improve LIRR service, reliability, and safety, for both residents and commuters on Long Island.

LIRR to Conduct Routine Rail Safety Tests on the Montauk Branch During Mid-Day Off-Peak Periods, April 17-20

Long Island Rail Road workers will perform routine track inspections on the Montauk Branch during mid-day off-peak hours from Monday, April 17, through Thursday, April 20. The tests will be performed using a specialized diagnostic car fitted with ultrasonic and induction test equipment and is designed to detect internal rail defects not readily visible to the eye. Any defects that are found will be corrected immediately.

Buses to Substitute for Trains at Two LIRR Ronkonkoma Branch Stations on Saturday; Critical Work Needed to Advance ‘Double Track Project’ to Improve Capacity and Service

Buses will substitute for trains at two LIRR Ronkonkoma Branch stations all day Saturday, April 15, in order to allow crews to conduct critical work to advance the LIRR’s Ronkonkoma Branch Double Track Project, which will add increased train service, capacity and allow greater flexibility to minimize the impact of service disruptions along the branch.

The “Double Track Project” will add a second track to the 18-mile stretch from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma by the end of 2018.

10 Morning Rush-Hour LIRR Trains Canceled Because Amtrak Crews Need More Time to Repair Tracks at Penn Station

Because Amtrak crews did not finish track repair work by 4 a.m. as promised and because they did not grant access to tracks overnight so that Long Island Rail Road could pre-position trains, LIRR is forced to once again operate a reduced morning rush-hour schedule this morning, which impacts 14 trains. The LIRR normally operates 144 morning rush hours train, 98 of which go to Penn Station.

LIRR Expects to Restore Full Service for Friday Morning Rush

MTA Long Island Rail Road is planning to operate a normal morning rush hour schedule on Friday, April 7, pending Amtrak’s successful completion of track repairs following this week's derailment of a NJ TRANSIT train at Penn Station. The service restoration is also contingent on Amtrak’s promise to allow overnight access to tracks throughout the Penn Station area in order to ensure LIRR can pre-position trains and crews needed to run a full schedule.

Long Island Rail Road workers will perform routine track inspections between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma during the early morning hours of Saturday, April 8. The tests will be performed using a specialized diagnostic car fitted with ultrasonic and induction test equipment and is designed to detect internal rail defects not readily visible to the eye. Any defects that are found will be corrected immediately.

“This specialized ultrasonic rail testing is an important component of our ongoing efforts to ensure the continued safety of our rails,” said LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski.
