MTA & LIRR to Help Long Island Small Businesses Pursue Millions in Contracts under 2015-2019 Capital Program

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is stepping up efforts to recruit and train small business owners on Long Island, especially those certified as New York State Minority, Women-owned and MTA-certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (MWDBE) to bid for billions of dollars in contracts that will be awarded under the transportation agency’s 2015-19 Capital Program.

New LIRR Train Schedules Start on Monday, May 18

The MTA Long Island Rail Road is introducing new system-wide timetables on Monday, May 18. The new train schedules, which will remain in effect until September 7, offer four significant service improvements and coincide with the annual introduction of seasonal summer services and the start of track work season throughout the railroad.

Thoroughbred racing returns to Belmont Park next Wednesday, April 29 as the racetrack’s spring meet gets underway and MTA Long Island Rail Road and the New York Racing Association (NYRA) again join together to provides daily train service for racing fans.

Buses Replace Mid-Day Montauk Branch Trains

For four days next week, the Long Island Rail Road will perform mid-day track inspections on the Montauk Branch. Crews will use an advanced Sperry rail car to search for metal fatigue and faults beneath the surface of the steel rails, and make repairs as needed.

As crews perform the work, buses will replace between two and three trains per day in each direction. Customers should plan to build in additional travel time as described below and in a special timetable.

Reminder: Buses Replace Trains Babylon to Speonk for Trackwork on Four Weekends: Apr. 11-12, Apr. 18-19 & 25-26, May 2-3

Buses will replace train service on the Montauk Branch between Babylon and Speonk for track maintenance work on four upcoming weekends on the weekends of April 11-12, April 18-19, April 25-26 and May 2-3 from 1:36 a.m. on Saturday through 1:46 a.m. Monday morning. This information was originally announced on March 20.

Normal Service Expected for Evening Rush Hour on Ronkonkoma Branch as Signal Repairs Are Complete

The Long Island Rail Road expects to run trains on or close to schedule on the Ronkonkoma Branch east of Hicksville during Thursday evening’s rush hour following the completion of signal repairs and testing west of Wyandanch. Previously, there had been speed restrictions in the area causing delays of 15 - 25 minutes.

The LIRR welcomes the 2015 baseball season with extra service at Citi Field for the New York Mets home opener on April 13, when they take on the Philadelphia Phillies at 1:10 p.m. And don’t miss the Mets season opener viewing party on April 6 when they play the Nationals in Washington, D.C. at 4:05 p.m. The Mets will be simulcasting the game on Citi Field’s new hi-definition video display. Port Washington Branch trains will make stops at Mets-Willets Point between 2:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Ronkonkoma Branch Customers Should Anticipate Delays of 15-25 Minutes During Wednesday Evening and Thursday Morning Rush Hours as Repairs Continue to Infrastructure Damaged in Freight Derailment

The Long Island Rail Road’s Ronkonkoma Branch customers should anticipate 15-25 minute delays east of Hicksville during rush hours on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning due to the damage to the LIRR’s signal system caused by the derailment of a New York & Atlantic freight car west of Wyandanch Station. LIRR trains will be operating at a reduced speed between Farmingdale and Wyandanch.

On Thursday morning, two eastbound Ronkonkoma Branch trains will be partially canceled and bus service provided.

LIRR to Provide Additional Train Service For the Start of Passover and Good Friday

The Long Island Rail Road will provide additional eastbound service on Friday, April 3 for customers leaving work early in observance of Passover and Good Friday. The railroad will operate a regular weekday schedule with 10 additional trains departing Penn Station between 1:46 p.m. and 3:48 p.m. There will be four additional trains on the Babylon Branch, three on the Port Jefferson Branch, one on the Port Washington Branch, one on the Ronkonkoma Brach and one on the Far Rockaway Branch. In addition, one other Port Jefferson train will make an extra stop at Jamaica
