LIRR Adds East End Service for Extended July 4 Weekend

MTA Long Island Rail Road is offering plenty of extra train service to the East End over the extended Independence Day Weekend, including an extra Cannonball to Montauk on top of the Railroad’s already enhanced summer Montauk Branch schedule. Highlights follow here and customers can pick up a copy of the current Montauk and Ronkonkoma/Greenport timetables or view them online at www.mta.info/lirr.

The Long Island Rail Road will provide additional afternoon service from Penn Station, Thursday, July 2 for customers planning an early getaway for the Independence Day weekend.

Buses Replace Trains Between Port Washington & Great Neck the Weekend of June 20-21 for Demolition of Colonial Road Bridge

Some 18,000 MTA Long Island Rail Road customers who travel on the Port Washington Branch during the weekend of June 20-21 will face service reductions while contractors demolish the 115 year-old Colonial Road Bridge in the Village of Thomaston near Great Neck Station.

Buses Again Replace Trains Between Port Jefferson and Huntington for Installation of New Concrete Ties

The Long Island Rail Road wants to remind Port Jefferson Branch customers that buses will again replace trains between Port Jefferson and Huntington over the weekend of Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, as the LIRR resumes the installation of new concrete ties along that stretch of track. As a result, service along the route will be reduced from every 90 minutes to every two hours, and buses connect to alternate trains.

LIRR Thanks Customers for a Successful Day at Belmont Stakes

MTA Long Island Rail Road President Patrick A. Nowakowski today thanked customers for returning to the Railroad to get to and from Belmont Park on Saturday to witness the historic Triple Crown victory of American Pharoah. Final ridership figures released today showed 25,583 racing fans took the train to the track and, in a surprising turn of events, 28,947 used the railroad to return home. The unexpected increased post-race ridership indicated customers believed LIRR could get them home efficiently even after last year’s well-publicized difficulties.

Service Reduced from Hourly to 2 Hourly on Saturday June 6 from 3 p.m-10 p.m. for the Belmont Stakes

Service on the Hempstead Branch will be reduced from one train every hour to one train every two hours this coming Saturday, June 6 between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. when one track is taken out of regular service to help the Long Island Rail Road meet the extra service demand to and from Belmont Park for the Belmont Stakes. The service change affects all service between Hempstead and Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn as well as Penn Station via connections at Jamaica.

Weekend Travel Alert: Hempstead Branch

Buses replace westbound trains at Queens Village and Hollis beginning at 10:30 PM on Friday, May 29 through 3:30 AM on Monday, June 1 as the LIRR suspends service to allow workers to waterproof the 211th St. Bridge near Jamaica Ave. in Queens. Service will be restored in time for Monday’s rush hour. A second weekend outage will be necessary to complete the project. That work is currently scheduled to begin late Friday, June 26 and finish up early Monday, June 29.

Weekend Travel Alert: Port Jefferson Branch

Buses will replace trains between Port Jefferson and Huntington over the weekend of Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 as the Long Island Rail Road resumes the installation of new concrete ties along that stretch of track. As a result, service along the route will be reduced from hourly to every two hours.

The installation work, which got underway in March, will continue on non-holiday weekends through the summer and will also impact travel between Huntington and Hicksville where service will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly.
